Benefiting Our Workers

The WELS Benefit Plans Office offers two main benefit plans:
the WELS VEBA Group Health Care Plan and the WELS Pension Plan.

WELS VEBA Health Plan

The WELS VEBA Group Health Care Plan is the WELS-sponsored group health care plan that is available to all active, eligible workers at WELS and ELS ministry locations. The WELS VEBA health plan provides comprehensive medical, prescription drug and vision benefits to members.

WELS VEBA also offers a wide range of voluntary benefits available to eligible workers enrolled in the WELS VEBA health plan. Please view the pages linked below to learn more about these additional benefits.

WELS VEBA Health Plan

WELS Pension Plan

The WELS Pension Plan is a defined benefit plan that provides benefits upon retirement to eligible, vested participants. Benefits are provided in the form of a monthly lifetime annuity.

The Plan also offers retired workers the opportunity to provide monthly lifetime benefits to their surviving spouses, and a lump sum death benefit for workers who die while serving an active call.

WELS Shepherd Plan

The WELS Shepherd Plan is the denominational 403(b) retirement income account plan sponsored by WELS. The Shepherd Plan provides workers with an opportunity to save and invest a portion of their earnings during their working years to provide income during their retirement years. Participation in the WELS Shepherd Plan is voluntary, and WELS calling bodies are permitted (but not required) to make employer contributions to the Shepherd Plan accounts of their workers.
