Eligibility & Enrollment

Eligibility

Employee Eligibility

To be eligible for Voluntary Group Term Life (GTL) coverage, a worker must:

  • Be an active worker at an eligible sponsoring organization, and
  • Be hired or called to work at least 20 hours per week, in a position lasting five or more months per year.

Please note that either the worker applying for GTL coverage, or another worker at that worker’s sponsoring organization, must be enrolled for health benefits under WELS VEBA.

Important: If WELS VEBA health plan coverage for all the workers of a sponsoring organization is terminated, the GTL coverage for all workers will also be terminated.

Dependent Eligibility

A worker’s spouse is a qualified dependent.

A worker’s unmarried dependent child, who is under age 26, is a qualified dependent.

Guaranteed Coverage for New Workers

Upon acceptance of a worker’s first call or hired position at an eligible sponsoring organization, the worker can obtain guaranteed GTL coverage for him/herself and eligible dependents without providing evidence of insurability. The worker must apply for GTL coverage within the first 60 days of the worker’s employment start date.

Guaranteed coverage amounts available to the worker and his/her dependents during this initial 60-day eligibility period are as follows:

  • $150,000/worker
  • $25,000/spouse
  • $5,000/child

Enrollment

If the worker does not enroll for guaranteed coverage within the initial 60-day enrollment period, or wishes to increase the amount of GTL coverage in effect, the worker can apply for GTL coverage at any time. Please note that the worker must provide evidence of insurability, which is subject to review and approval by Sun Life.
