Eligibility & Enrollment

Eligibility

To be eligible for Long Term Disability (LTD) coverage, a worker must:

  • Be an active worker at an eligible sponsoring organization, and
  • Be hired or called to work at least 20 hours per week, in a position lasting five or more months per year.

Please note that either the worker applying for LTD coverage, or another worker at that worker’s sponsoring organization, must be enrolled for health benefits under WELS VEBA.

Important: If WELS VEBA health plan coverage for all the workers of a sponsoring organization is terminated, the LTD coverage for all workers will also be terminated.

Enrollment

Enrollment in LTD coverage is automatic for eligible workers who enroll for WELS VEBA health plan benefits as the primary subscriber.

Eligible workers who are not enrolled in the WELS VEBA health plan (including workers who are covered as dependents under their spouse’s WELS VEBA health plan) may apply for LTD coverage on a Voluntary basis.

Upon acceptance of a worker’s first call or hired position at an eligible sponsoring organization, the worker can obtain Voluntary LTD coverage without providing evidence of insurability if the worker applies for Voluntary LTD coverage within the first 60 days of the worker’s employment start date.

If the worker does not enroll for Voluntary LTD coverage within the initial 60-day enrollment period, the worker can apply for Voluntary LTD coverage at any time. Please note that the worker must provide evidence of insurability, which is subject to review and approval by Sun Life.
